Благородный капитан Джезаль дан Луфар — бравый офицер и воплощение эгоизма. Самое рискованное, из того, что он хочет в своей жизни — это обчистить друзей в карты, и мечтает он лишь о славе в круге для фехтования. Но грядет война, и на полях ледяного Севера сражаться придётся по куда более жестоким правилам.
Инквизитор Глокта — калека, ставший пыточных дел мастером, — больше всего хотел бы увидеть, как Джезаль сыграет в ящик. Но с другой стороны, Глокта ненавидит всех: когда выбиваешь одно признание за другим, чтобы очистить Союз от государственной измены, времени на дружбу не остаётся. И цепочка трупов может привести его прямо в прогнившее сердце правительства, если, конечно, ему удастся прожить достаточно долго.
А вот и волшебник, Байяз. Лысый старик с ужасным характером и с жалким помощником. Может, он Первый из Магов, а может просто талантливый мошенник, но, кем бы он ни был, он сильно усложнит жизни Логена, Джезаля и Глокты.
Всплывают смертоносные заговоры, сводятся старые счёты, а грань между героем и злодеем так тонка, что об неё можно порезаться.
